Form 9 went to Foz Place gym
On Friday 4th May, the Form 9 IGCSE PE students went to Foz Place gym as part of their course. We walked to the gym which helped us to warm up, when we got there Miss Dawid gave us some sheets and we began with a warm up on the treadmills, we had to make sure we knew all the safety precautions so as that we did not get injured. After that we, stretched and filled in some of our sheets. Next we had to work for 20 minutes without stopping on any machine of our choice which would improve our cardiovascular fitness. The girls used the cross-trainer and the boys used the bicycles, by the end of the twenty minutes we all had our heart rates up and were red in the face. We cooled down in a separate room and had a well-deserved drink of water. After this we used the muscle machines, which showed us how different muscles can be worked by different machines. This was the part which was new to most people. We had to run back to school in the rain and got pretty wet! It was a very good experience and was very fun!

Form 9 Vocational Orientation
It was the 6th of January when Form 9 answered a vocational orientation test. The objective of it was to give the more undecided pupils the opportunity to have an idea about their future jobs. The test consisted of two main parts: a personal information part, where we wrote who we were, how our life is and also what do we expect of our future, and a second part which consisted of two questionnaires. The longest questionnaire, consisting of 170 questions, was the California Occupational Preference System (COPS). This questionnaire took me and the rest of the class more than half an hour to complete. Some of the questions were like:
“Would you like to work in a cinema or an theater and lead people to their places?”
We had to give our answers in a table in a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being “I seriously wouldn’t” and 5 being “I seriously would”. The results haven’t come out yet but the results are expected to be announced on the 12th of March.
The test was organized by Rita Neto Quintas.

Form 6 trip to Dinosaur exhibition (7th February)
Currently in science we’ve been studying Variation and Classification. To reinforce our knowledge we went to see a dinosaur exhibition held in "Pavilhão Rosa Mota" in Palácio do Cristal. We left school after assembly and got back in time for lunch. When we got to the exhibition Ms.Mitchell gave us 7 questions and while we were in our groups of 8 we had to complete them. Afterwards, we saw amazing dinosaur skeletons and there were also some fascinating dinosaur models which were really realistic: they blinked, their tongue stuck out and they looked like they were breathing . Later on we had the option to see a 5D, 5 minute video that showed us how it was in the dinosaur age. Following on we had our break and got the bus back to school. Overall the trip was amazing and we enjoyed it a lot.

New Year's Sport tournament
On the 6th January 2012, Division 4 & 3 travelled up to Braga, to play in the first ever New Year's Tournament, held at the "Universidade do Minho", where all boys and girls played basketball. Three schools participated in the tournament, OBS, CLIB and CLIP. The bus arrived around nine o'clock, and division 3 girls had to go straight into a game against CLIP. We were all very worried, as it was our first game in a long time. Although we tried very hard, we did not manage to win the game, we lost 12-34. next it was boys turn to play against CLIB, they were more prepared for the tournament as they had been trained for Lisbon during the Autumn term. They fought very hard, and played fantastically but managed to lose the game by only four baskets. The next game was also the boy's, they played against CLIP, they have a very strong team, unfourtunately the OBS boys did not manage to win, as the other team managed to score many points, they lost 12-54. After lunch, the Division 3 girls played against CLIB, it was a very close match, the points staying very close together throughout the match. In the end we lost by only two baskets, we were very disappointed. For our last match, we played OBS girls vs OBS boys, it was a very entertaining game, as we were not expecting to play against our own school.
The OBS girls scored 36 point in total, also for committing the smallest amount of fouls in the tournament in Division 3, the OBS won the FairPlay trophy. The OBS boys scored 35 points in total and also only committing 10 fouls, the least amount as well as the girls. In the end both division 3 teams ended up in 3rd place.
Overall we enjoyed the tournament very much, it was a very good experience and gave us a chance to meet new people!

Senior choir sing at Exponor
6th December
Senior choir sing at the German School
On Wednesday the 30th of November, members of the senior choir went to the German school to practice for the big Exponor concert. We practiced the song Silent Night/Night of Silence. It is Silent Night in the background and Night of Silence is the main focus. We left after registration; as soon as the other schools got there we were practicing all the time. By the time we came back it was probably 10 minutes into Period 4.

Lighting up of the Christmas tree
You are all cordially invited to attend our second PTA, “Lighting up of the Christmas Tree” event on Wednesday, 14th December at 4.20pm.
Preview of the new Senior Block
On the 16th of November we went to visit the new senior block. We entered from the outside, since the inside entry isn't available for use yet. This "exclusive preview" was directed by the headmaster himself. We got to see all of the classrooms and THE WALL, but it's still an empty wall and the classrooms are empty classrooms. The building or block is joined to the old building where the OBS students used to have "modern languages". At first glance everything looks a lot bigger than the impression you get seeing it from the campus.
We started the visit in the foyer and after the usual explanation of student flow and such we got to see the Art room. The Art room looked spacious and clean, and lets in a lot of natural light. It also has an exclusive terrace for outdoor painting and will include computer for design, something which OBS students have been eager for. The classrooms are built equally on three floors, have an excellent area of education and provide a comfortable environment. All of the classrooms will feature views out onto the street, making you feel like you are in a high-rise. There has not been a decision about the use of the classrooms but that will be decided soon.
On the first floor we can find the new ICT suite which surprisingly will not have the much spoken I-macs. The wall video mentions that the money raised is for purchasing the new suite and includes a picture of a line of I-macs but the Headmaster explained that it is a security issue.
Moving up to the second floor we see the ordinary alignment of classrooms, however when we move up to the third floor we can see the"ecological roof" and an amazing view of the entire campus. Also, on the third floor we find three multi-purpose classrooms which have sliding doors so that you can convert them into a big hall. And the new IB common room is built into a sort of attic which has been opened to let in more natural light. The entire building will feature power sockets available for all students , a large outdoor patio and high speed fibre optic Internet access.
We were impressed by the architectural style of the new block and the way the School has managed to integrate it with the style that is present in buildings outside the school. If there is something we noticed the lack of it is toilets. It does not have many. We did not get to see the library, but it is said to feature a "Y" shaped table and Macintosh computers. We hope the library will also be redesigned for greater comfort.

Make someone smile this Christmas?
Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan’s Purse
This project is part of a charity that was founded 21 years ago by a gentleman named Bob Pierce, who was a missionary working with underprivileged children in Africa. These children were victims of famine, civil war, earthquakes and droughts; Bob helped to organise medical aid and money, to ensure that the children lead a relatively normal life and were able to recover from these life changing tragedies. He was also instrumental in providing the children with hope for the future. His work did not go unnoticed and word of his efforts began to spread throughout the whole of Africa and across into Asia. Meanwhile in England, a Charity with a similar purpose was underway by the name of Operation Christmas Child which was primarily set up to offer underprivileged children in the UK and parts of Europe, a Christmas box to open with a variety of gifts that had been donated by children who were more fortunate than themselves.
This Charity Organisation began as a worldwide project but as this is our first year, we would like to prepare and deliver our Christmas Shoeboxes to local Orphanages and Children´s Homes in the Porto area. This Christmas, the OBS are going to make up Christmas Shoeboxes for underprivileged children at orphanages and children´s homes in and around the Porto area. The aim/target is to distribute 200 boxes.
Some of the Children who live in these Orphanages and Homes, although they receive daily care, aren´t privileged to have: Parents, a Family Home, Money, Clothes, Family Love, Education, Health Care
Some of these children don´t even know the meaning of Christmas.
The shoeboxes will be filled with gifts appropriate for the age and gender of each child, for example;
A shoebox for a girl could include; Jewellery, hair bands, winter hat, scarf and gloves, cuddly toys, small travel games like; (Monopoly, Scrabble, Snakes and Ladders and playing cards), sweets, make-up, writing paper, pencils, felt-tip pens, toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues, drawing book, reading books, etc.
A shoebox for a boy could include; Toy cars, football magazine, cards and stickers, winter hat, scarf and gloves, cuddly toys, small travel games like; (Monopoly, Scrabble, Snakes and Ladders and playing cards) sweets, toothbrush and toothpaste, socks, writing paper, pencils, felt-tip pens, drawing book, reading books, etc.
A shoebox can't include: Aerosol cans, fizzy drinks, chocolate, nuts, sharp, toy weapons and flammable objects.
JUST REMEMBER! When you pack your shoebox, if you were the one with nothing receiving a mystery box at Christmas, what gifts would make you happy
If you would like to make up a shoebox, you will need the following:
A shoebox, small cardboard or plastic box (with dimensions of a shoebox),
A sticker (Collected from School) specifying the age and gender of the child that they would like to send the box to.
Gifts appropriate for the age and gender chosen.
Please do not seal the box after it has been filled, as each box has to be checked before delivery
How to make a shoebox?
1. Shoebox- Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), with Christmas paper.
2. Boy or girl- Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-18.3. Fill with gifts- Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child of your chosen age and gender.
We would like to emphasise the importance of you choosing gifts that they already own and may not have a use for anymore and that a child with nothing may benefit from. Please could you have the shoebox ready, no later than Monday, 12th December 2011 and deliver it to the Music room.
Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan´s Purse is a wonderful opportunity for you to donate gifts to someone who is less fortunate than yourself. Find it in your heart to make someone smile this Christmas.

Lisbon Sports Festival
Division 3 girls:On Thursday 17th November, students from Forms 4 to 9, travelled to CAISL (Carlucci American International School Lisbon) to participate in Autumn Basketball and Football Tournament. All of our teams were very excited to see the new school where we would be playing at for the first time! When we finally arrived, we payed a quick visit to the hotel to drop our bags off and made our way to the tournaments venue. When we arrived we settled our meeting point and all the teams separated out, checking game schedules and supporting each other in matches.
Girls Division 3 first football match was against DSL, we were all nervous because we knew they were a strong team, and as our first of six opponents, we knew it would be a tough match. In the end we lost the match 2-0! Our second match of the day was against CLIP, a team we had beaten at a practice match before leaving for the tournament, we held strong and managed not to allow them to score, they did a good job themselves as we did not score either, in the end the game tied 0-0, we were all tired but glad we had been able to secure one point towards our placing!
We were all exhausted by the end of the first day, having woken up extremely early, and having played sports all day, all of us were glad to get back and have a shower and relax after that!
On Friday 18th November, we woke up and everyone went to breakfast! We ate and made our way to CAISL by bus. Our first match was against St. Julians, we were all aching a little bit from the day before, but we did our best in this match and managed to only lose 4-0, an improvement to last year’s 11-0! We played again at the end of the day against ISA, a very strong team, who had not lost any matches so far. In this game we managed to score one of the two goals we scored in the whole tournament, we were very proud of Ana Filipe Bela! Although we managed to score, the other team had already scored two goals; unfortunately we lost yet another match! As we had our last match of the day at 14:30 we managed to have time to watch the Division 3 Boys Basketball, who were to play against the home team; CAISL! Most of the OBS’ teams were sitting together supporting the boys and cheering for them endlessly, although the boys tried their best, they were beaten! We all gathered and made our way to the bus to return to the hotel to have supper! We all went to bed early, tired from all the events of the day, getting all of our bags completely wet and running to go and get them as soon as we finished our last game!
On the last day of the tournament, we all woke up earlier than usual because the game schedule had been changed; therefore we had to be at the school at 08:30! We warmed up for our first game which was at 10:00, it was against St. Dominic’s, a strong team, but not un-beatable! We managed to score our second goal of the tournament to tie this game, we were proud of our performance! Our last match of the tournament was against CAISL, we tried very hard in this game, but the team got one chance to score and used it! We lost 1-0! We were disappointed knowing that we had come in 7th place!
The last matches of the day were Division 3 and 5 games, the boys were playing basketball, both of the OBS teams won their last games! Division 3 beat DSL by one point, and Division 5 won against CAISL by a few points! Everyone was cheering their teams on and we were all very happy to know that we had won those games! At last we had the awards ceremony, overall divisions 4 and 5 did very well! Division 3 Girls were very proud to have won the Fairplay trophy and the boys managed to come joint fourth with DSL!
The Lisbon Sports Festival was extremely fun for everyone! We played sports and enjoyed ourselves supporting each other in all our matches!

IMUN Lisbon Trip
On Wednesday, 9th of November, 18 students departed at lunch time to Lisbon. We arrived at Lisbon at 8pm. We had dinner by the hotel and went to sleep.
On Thursday, we left at 11am and had a visit through Sintra. The opening ceremony was at midday in CAISL. We were welcomed by the administrative staff who gave us our portfolios and identification for those 3 days. After, we were introduced to the secretary general, co-secretary general, chair and co-chair of special conference and Security Council. The secretary general told us to go to specific classroom. Each forum had different issues and each issue had a classroom. Each of us went to a specific classroom and merged or lobbied our resolutions. Some of us didn’t have one, so they just had to co-submit resolutions. You could only co-submit one resolution per issue and you couldn’t submit resolutions that were not from your forum. Roughly at 4pm, we had a snack and we got to know people from different schools or even different countries. At 6pm, we went back to the hotel. We had dinner in Cascais.
On Friday, we left at 7:30am (due to a strike) to Centro Cultural de Belém. The conference started at 9am and we were introduced to the procedures of the debate. We were informed that Jorge Sampaio was going to talk at the General Assembly. The Special Conference saw it through a projector. After, we were given the opportunity to ask question to him. We had a break and then the delegates started with their opening speeches. The first opening speech was decided by Jorge Sampaio who picked a random country from a bowl where there was the name of various countries. After the opening speeches, we debated issue 1. The resolution for issue 1 was passed. We had 1 hour and a half for lunch. After lunch, we debated issue 2 but unfortunately the resolution was failed. At 6pm, we went to Pastéis de Belém and had some pastéis. All fo us enjoyed it. We left at 7pm. Some of us had pizza for dinner.
On Saturday, we had another early morning. We were already familiar with the procedures so we debated issue 3, 4 and 5. After debating issue 3 and a bit of issue 4, we had lunch. After lunch time, we debated issue 5. Sadly, on that day, all resolutions failed. The special conference delegate went to the General Assembly and there was a closing ceremony. There were lots of Thanks to everyone. We had to say bye to everyone we met. We exchanged contacts so we could keep in touch. Finally, we left Lisbon at 6:30pm and arrived at Porto at 10:30pm.
To sum up, we had lots of fun and we met lots of people from different countries

Harvest Festival
On Tuesday the 25th of October, we went to Stella Maris Church to celebrate Harvest. Forms 4-12 walked to the Church. The service started at 4:30pm and finished at 5:20pm. We sang various carols. But as always, we finished with Paintbox which everyone enjoys. Also, the violin quartet with Form 6 members played a beautiful song. We thank all of you for your presence at the Harvest Festival

Avalon theatre
On the 20th of October 2011 the Avalon Theatre, came to our school once again to perform another spectacular show. Forms 8 to 12 watched the performance of “Hotel, Hotel”, a truly entertaining play. A hotel owner who is struggling to keep things “afloat” at “Hotel, Hotel”, runs into more trouble when the renowned Editor of the “Good Hotel Guide” comes to review his hotel. Trouble sparks with eccentric guests, infuriating staff and a difficult wife. Nothing goes right for the hotel owner, and he has to deal with strange ordeals. All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially participating in the play itself!

'All for Nepal' CAS Project 2012:
On Saturday 22nd October, Form 11 students took part in the first activity of what will hopefully be a very successful fundraising campaign. We organised a car wash with Ms Mitchell and Mr Stedman and everyone was keen and motivated, including Mrs Rodriges Santos and Ms Dawid who were both amazingly helpful. Parents contributed by bringing cars that left the campus shining and even teachers brought their cars (or caravans) for us to wash. Primary children that were at the school rehearsing for the Drama production were quick to embrace the volunteering spirit, grabbing sponges and helping us with the car washing. Overall, it was a fantastic day where we managed to raise €350 and officially begin our challenge to raise the money for a great cause and for what will surely be a memorable trip.

The Wall
In May 2009, OBS launched a fund raising campaign, Be a Brick: building for the future. In conjunction with the building of the new Senior Block, the school hosted a launch party where the architect, Mr Matthew Salt, gave details of the new building.
Attendees, friends and families were then given an opportunity to purchase a brick, which would be placed along the wall at the entrance of the new block, with the names of families who have contributed to the fund raising.
To date, we have raised 37.000,00€, which will fund the purchase of a new IT suite for the students.
We have recently embarked on a phase of design development, which has added on the original initiative, and has woven an historical timeline into the wall, and transformed the ‘bricks’ into ‘shards’. Names will be placed alongside significant historical dates, during the period 1894, when the school was founded, through to 2012, when the Senior Block is formally opened.
So, as the Senior block nears completion, we are re-launching the initiative to encourage more pledges from friends, family, alumni and companies to add their names to what will become an iconic edifice.
